CAN and DEW

Students of Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind are in for a special treat this weekend! The dedicated Outreach team at MSDB has lovingly prepared a great agenda for the Deaf Enrichment Weekend online. In addition, MSDB has invited C.A.N. to provide one hour of activities!

For MSDB’s Spring DEW of 2021, amazing Deaf leaders from around the country are giving their time to encourage and inspire deaf students in Montana! This is why we LOVE Deaf community! Deaf adults know the need in a way that no other person can know. They serve with a passion that cannot be replicated. And they inspire deaf kids with a power that launches them to successful adulthood.

C.A.N. is delighted and honored to share with you our line-up for the hour:

Utilizing Zoom’s breakout feature, registered students and families can choose from the following options:

MT Family ASL Session: 1:30 – 2:30 PM MDT (whole hour for early language learners and families) For families with young or language delayed children up to ten years old, Cecily Whitworth, PhD. will teach parents and kids how to play fun language building games together.

Being Kind to Animals: 1:30 – 2:00 PM MDT (first half hour for grades k-12)
Learn about pet care and Montana animals with Michel Dazé and his Deaf family, and meet their dogs, Ale and Chacha! Michel is the After School Programs Coordinator at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School. (ASL/English interpreter will be present to voice/sign for all involved)

Being Kind to Your Body: 2:00 – 2:30 PM MDT (option 1: second half hour for grades k-6) Get moving!! Fun physical fitness and self care with Janna Sirianni, Deaf Certified Personal Trainer  at YMCA in Rochester, New York. (ASL/English interpreter will be present to voice/sign for all involved)

What to do When Others are not Kind: 2:00 – 2:30 (option 2: second half hour for grades 4-12) Lesson on self-advocacy and accommodations presented by Dustin Maynard, co-founder of maynardcreative.com and first-ever Deaf Supervisor at Gatorade. (ASL/English interpreter will be present to voice/sign for all involved)
